Building Strong Families: Parenting on Your Own

  • Workshops designed by people who are lone parents
  • 10 workshops, each with a specific topic
  • Located in a community setting
  • Parents attend the workshop while the children participate in supervised play

Family Events

  • Initiatives that are fun for the whole family
  • Most events are planned and implemented in conjunction with local community associations and/or other agencies
  • All initiatives have the dual purpose of forming connections between socially isolated families and exposing people to low cost activities

Reduction of Financial Barriers for Recreation

  • Free tickets through Kid’s Up Front
  • Fair Entry Fee Assistance program letters
  • Fund individual children for recreational pursuits via service groups and individual donations
  • Referrals to Tim Horton’s Camp
  • Work directly with community associations to cover the direct costs of individual children
  • Gifts for children’s birthdays
  • Telus Sparks Science Centre entry certificates

Christmas Celebrations

  • Assistance with referrals and promotions to holiday meals provided by community based organizations
  • Help with the planning and implementation of events in the communities of Bowness and Ranchlands
  • Referrals to organizations supplying food hampers and/or children’s gifts (Red Cross, Samaritan’s Club, Salvation Army, the Food Bank & churches

Kiwanis Bikes for the Family

  • Free, refurbished bikes and new helmets for the whole family provided by the Kiwanis Club of Calgary
  • The Bowness Lions Club assists with the delivery of the bikes

Calgary Reads

  • Provide free books to children based on their reading level and area of interest
  • Books distributed when visiting BowWest, at the Nurturing Parenting workshops, and at family events in which BowWest is involved
