Volunteers

BowWest appreciates what our volunteers help us do in the community. We love them—and they tell us the feeling is mutual!

Volunteers help with reception services, staff our free clothing room, help organize and operate special events like community barbecues or focus groups, and assist at Fresh Market Connections, a free-food market held every two weeks in the Bowness and Ranchlands offices. Other volunteers help with free tax clinics, odd jobs and child-minding assistance when caregivers are attending BowWest programs.

All of our volunteers get the information and support they need to do a fantastic and rewarding job. For information about volunteering with BowWest, including positions, training, time commitment, location and support, please send an email to info@bowwest.org. You can also leave a telephone message at 403-374-0448. Some volunteer positions are also posted on line. Look for BowWest postings at https://www.propellus.org

Here are some of the ways volunteers support our work. We’d love to talk with you about any of the following roles. We also welcome new ideas from our volunteer corps.

Board & Committee Members

The BowWest Community Support Services Society is always looking for individuals who want to make their communities a better place to live, work and play!

Guided by a strategic plan, our volunteer Board and Committee Members pursue programs and projects that purposefully connect economically-vulnerable individuals and families to the resources they need to leverage the economic, social and educational opportunities that are available to help them lead more resilient lives. Our commitment to Support, Connect and Educate objectively “connects the dots” that lead people and communities to action and positive change.

The Board is open to all. Board work may be especially rewarding for individuals who live or work in one of the communities we serve.

Reception/Program Support

Welcome people to BowWest by greeting them at the door and answering the phone. You will be helping people fax and copy, assisting them with access to the Clothing Room, and handing out emergency food hampers.

When: We would appreciate you coming on a weekly basis, on the morning or afternoon of your choosing.

Child Minding

Several of our programs offer free childcare to participants.

Location: Off-site. Program dependent.
When: Program dependent. Typically 2-3 hours.

Fresh Market Connections—Drivers/Delivery

Volunteers comfortable with driving and lifting can help our staff pick up food from the Calgary Food Bank.

Location: Calgary Food Bank, BowWest offices in Ranchlands and Bowness
When: Every second Thursday.

Fresh Market Connections—Market Support

Work with our staff to set up Fresh Market Connections every second Thursday. The free food markets give people a way to access fresh food in their own community.

Odd Jobs

Simple fixes such as tightening the screws on the back gate. You do not need more than a hammer and a screwdriver to tackle the odd jobs on our list.

Tax Clinics

Volunteer to complete tax returns or to assist with clinic management.
